FirstPriority implementation for Department of Defence

With highly complex and dangerous work, a large, dispersed workforce and complex operating environments, Defence needs to consider and manage a number of safety contexts and risks. FirstPriority was selected to modernise, integrate and transform their risk management approach.

Overview

Safety underpins all aspects of Defence capability and is integral for the organisation to achieve its mission of protecting Australia.

Held to a high standard within the community, Defence must also meet its legislative OHS and privacy obligations for its employees and the areas in which it operates.

Solution

Implemented in 2014 and hosted on the Defence Protected Network, FirstPriority (known as Sentinel) provides a single enterprise-wide mechanism for managing and reporting on work, health and safety at Defence.

With the software system customised to the risk profile and organisational needs of Defence, RMT worked closely with various Defence areas to ensure a successful implementation, onboarding and training.

Internally called Sentinel, the single software solution has supported Defence review and strengthen its safety processes, from reporting to compliance, and manage organisational risk.

Outcomes

  • Successful roll-out of campus training to all Defence personnel
  • Removal of duplication around reporting of work health and safety hazards, incidents, risks and other management activities (e.g. audit and assurance)
  • Uniform view of risk and safety that enables information sharing
  • More informed decision making through access to reliable safety management information.
  • Regular WHS Safety coordinator training conducted across Defence
  • Constant review and development of system to meet changing needs
  • Improved safety of the Defence personnel
